STOP the FLOATING LANTERNS of VENICE GRAND CANAL MALL!

WE NEED TO STOP THIS!

On 26 March, McKinley Hill posted the following on its Facebook page as part of its participation in celebrating this year's Earth Hour: (https://www.facebook.com/VeniceGrandCanal/photos/a.407619624027/10157134695309028/?type=3&theater)

"Join the worldwide #EarthHour on March 30, 5pm at Venice Grand Canal. Show your support to the global movement against climate change when you purchase floating lanterns on your next Gondola ride."

However, we perceive this notion to be exactly against what it claims to represent. In a period where environmental protection should be a priority, the potential use of floating lanterns (supposedly to show support for the fight against climate change) will actually be harmful to the environment.

Thus, we need your support in demanding that McKinley Hill must immediately stop the sale of floating lanterns on 30 March 2019 and beyond. There are more environment-friendly ways to truly show support in the fight against not only climate change, but also environmental degradation.

Why is this important?

Floating lanterns represent the unsustainable, wasteful and ecologically apathetic practices that have led to environmental degradation.

Despite possible claims of being biodegradable, parts of floating lanterns can actually take more than one year to degrade.

The organizers may say that they will collect and recycle the lanterns but there are other ways to protect the planet and support the global movement against climate change: use renewable energy to power their facilities and buildings, grow trees and adapt forests/protected areas, and many others.

And yet corporate groups like the management of the Venice Grand Canal Mall continue to neglect proper conduct in support of environmental protection in exchange for more profits. Furthermore, this must serve as a warning to us that some of these organizations will even use the noble causes of climate action and environmental protection as part of their agenda to simply make more money.

If McKinley Hill is truly serious about supporting climate action and environmental protection, it should start by making sure that no lanterns will float on Earth Hour, 30 March.

How it will be delivered

We will send this to the organizers.
